Back Roads Radio- What is American?

You’ll hear the creative and inspiring voices of young thinkers and writers. This show features the collaborative work of Youth Media Project within northern New Mexico schools and colleges, where we teach the craft of digital storytelling and the art of listening for a socially responsible world. Students tackle the complex question, “What is American?” through audio cascades, commentaries, a fable, and a spoken word performance.

In this poignant piece, Inviolata from Tanzania shares with us her story of transnational living and how difficult it is to find “home” sometimes. She is a student at the United World College in Las Vegas, NM. Her story about growing up in multiple countries questions our notions of home, place, identity and nation. This piece was recorded at a Global Issues workshop at the UWC and aired on our Globalization show.

Conor questions watching sports in part as a video gamer- how is watching sports productive? how can you really feel the ‘win’ when you didn’t actually do anything? YMP is proud to say that we made the cut again this year and a YMP-produced project was recognized by PRX on their “Best Youth-Made Radio of 2011″ list.

Ellie Evans, a student from the New Mexico School For The Arts, created a piece that asks the question: What if? What if the world were different? This imaginative and poetic piece challenges our current understanding of the world around us. Her simple yet beautiful questions pull the rug out from underneath listeners- what if old is young… or what if we all understood basic human rights? Listen and let Ellie guide you through an imaginative world that could be better.

The MASTERS’ Service Learning Show

This episode of Audio Revolution! highlights the core issues relevant to the students from the MASTERS program’s service learning course. While students’ interests varied, two topics emerged as the themes for this show: Medicinal Marijuana and Environmental Justice/Sustainability. Hosts Briana Thomas of Santa Fe Community College and Arlo Barnes of the MASTERS charter school bring listeners in and out of a variety of topics: from a personal narrative and panel discussion about Medicinal Marijuana usage to poetry about the polluting of caves and much much more!

In this special Audio Revolution! broadcast, Youth Media Project teamed up with the spectacular SWAT Team at ATC. SWAT stands for the Student Wellness Action Team and is a program at Santa Fe Public Schools. This group from ATC (The Academy of Technology and the Classics) decided they wanted to better the lives of their peers by creating a powerful, moving and honest show about parent teen relationships. The show will share new perspectives and new truths about this important relationship and leave you contemplating your own familial life. Enjoy!
